Life Insurance for Tobacco Users in Idaho

If you smoke, vape, dip, or use nicotine in other forms, you already know it affects your health – and yes, it also affects life insurance pricing. But it does not mean you can’t get coverage.

I’m Chris Antrim, an independent agent in Boise. I help smokers and other tobacco users across Idaho find life insurance that acknowledges reality without wrecking their budget.

What Counts as “Tobacco” to Insurers?

Each company defines it slightly differently, but tobacco use can include:

  • Cigarettes

  • Cigars

  • Chew / dip

  • Pipe tobacco

  • Vaping / e-cigarettes

  • Nicotine replacement (patches, gum) – depending on guidelines

Some carriers are more lenient with:

  • Occasional cigars

  • Pipe smokers

  • Former smokers with sufficient time tobacco-free

How Tobacco Affects Rates

In simple terms:

  • Tobacco users pay more than non-tobacco users.

  • The difference depends on age, amount, and type of use.

  • Some companies offer better tobacco rates than others.

My job is to:

  • Place you with companies that are more competitive for tobacco users

  • Avoid products that are insanely overpriced for your situation

Policy Types for Tobacco Users

Depending on age and health, options include:

Term life

still often the best for big needs like income and mortgage protection

Whole life

for permanent needs and final expenses

Final expense

common for older tobacco users, easier underwriting

Simplified issue

no-exam options with health questions

Guaranteed issue

if heavy tobacco use is combined with serious health issues

We’ll decide what fits your health, budget, and goals.

What If You Quit Smoking?

If you’ve quit:

  • Most companies require you to be tobacco-free for a certain period (often 12+ months) to qualify for non-tobacco rates.

  • Some have special rules for cigar-only or vaping.

If you plan to quit soon, we can:

  • Talk about what’s available now

  • Revisit options later if you maintain tobacco-free status long enough to reclassify

Being Honest About Tobacco Use

Trying to hide tobacco use is a bad idea. Companies can:

  • Use lab tests (cotinine)

  • Check medical and prescription records

  • Contest claims if fraud is discovered

We’ll be up-front about your use and find carriers that work with it. Honest applications are always safer in the long run.
